How to Install Field Turf
Posted by Matt Garrabrants on
Field turf is the generic name of all those grasses that you see in sports arenas. A field turf can thus be the grass you see in a baseball field or a tennis court. In recent years, synthetic turf has become the choice material for installation in sports arenas. Fake turf has taken a lead over its natural counterpart due to a variety of reasons. Unlike natural grass, artificial turf lasts longer and requires little maintenance. It also provides players with a stable playing surface. It is thus a good idea if you focus on artificial turf while shopping for a new playing surface for your sports arena.
1. Find a Suitable Variety
You will need to find a variety of field turf that is ideal for your sports arena. This variety should correspond to the playing requirements of the sport that is played in your facility. You will need a dedicated baseball field turf in case the facility is reserved for that sport. You will need a soccer turf in case that game is played in your arena. There is a difference in the construction of these fields as the grass is packed in varying densities as per the regulations of the games. It thus becomes necessary to purchase a fake turf variety that complies with the rules and regulations of the governing body and is liked by the players.
2. Remove Existing Grass
First step you will need before installing field turf is to remove the existing grass. This should not take long if you are proceeding at brisk pace. You can use rollers and levelers for this purpose. They will come in handy during the later stages when the grass has been uprooted and you need to level the surface.
3. Install the Turf
The last step would be that of the installation of field turf in your facility. This may take a day or two depending on the expanse of the facility and the number of people performing the job. You can do the installation of field turf with your own manpower or hire professionals. Many facilities opt for the latter as they find it easier to hire professionals who complete the job in a flawless manner.
Fake turf installation for sports arenas is vastly different from the methods used to install grass in homes and small gardens. Average baseball field comes in a dimension of 300 feet by 300 feet, down the foul lines. This makes for a huge area where you need to install fake turf. Synthetic turf comes in the form of rolls that can be spread out and affixed to the ground with the help of glue, industrial staplers or other contraptions. Gravel is also required to keep the turf in place. This calls for a professional installation as they are expert in their trade and can complete the job in hours.
Installation of field turf will remove the need to replace sections of natural grass in your facility every other weekend. Fake turf can last for years as long as you are following the maintenance procedures.
