Maintenance Advice for Synthetic Lawns
Posted by Matt Garrabrants on
Complacency can be deadly to the longevity and wellbeing of synthetic items, as people can become overly confident as to the durability and robustness of the material to the grave detriment of the useful lifespan of said item. While there's no denying the fact that artificial grass is extremely resilient and capable of withstanding even the most harsh and adverse conditions, it is also worth noting that it requires some maintenance. This maintenance is a necessary evil to ensure that the synthetic grass has been and will be kept safe and secure for a long time to come.
With that in mind then, what are some of the best methods of maintenance to keep artificial grass in top condition?
Maintenance tips for synthetic grass
Great care must be exercised as to the cleaning agents utilized in the cleaning and maintenance of artificial grass and the reason for this is due to the fact that solvent based compounds, volatile organic compound cleaning solutions, cleaning agents that are alcohol and or acetone based can damage artificial grass. These cleaning agents can cause a great deal of damage and inflict more harm than good; causing permanent and irreversible discoloration, staining, erosion and mottling of the grass itself.
From a health and safety perspective, these corrosive chemicals can lie dormant on the surface of the artificial grass, posing a risk to wildlife, animals and young children who may approach the pitch.
Regular cleaning and sweeping of the artificial grass is also highly recommended and the reason for this is due to the fact that foreign objects can have an abrasive impact upon the synthetic lawn; damaging and eroding the rigidity and stability of the fibers of the grass itself. Therefore; leaves, bottles, coins, athletic tape and other sundry waste items must be disposed of as quickly as reasonably possible.
Where possible, vehicles should be directed away from the synthetic lawn, and if this cannot be avoided, then the length of time that said vehicle is exposed to the lawn should be severely limited and monitored. The reason for this due to the heat emissions that will be produced by virtue of the combustion process, which will invariably cause damage and discoloration to the synthetic lawn.
The best cleaning agent for synthetic grass is ordinary water, and rainfall is especially useful in this regard as it serves to ensure that the accumulation of dust and mineral deposits are gently removed quickly and efficiently. However, relying solely upon rainfall can be problematic especially in arid climates where the level of rainfall is limited. In such cases, manual irrigation of the synthetic lawn is advised in order to achieve maximum results.
One problem that should be kept at the forefront of the mind is the issue of the fibers of the artificial lawn becoming matted down over a period of time. In order to prevent this from happening, it is strongly recommended that the synthetic grass is brushed in differing directions with the brushing conducted by virtue of a series of single sweeps and brushes.
