How to Install Synthetic Turf
Posted by Matt Garrabrants on
What is synthetic turf? You must have come across the term numerous times and must have thought about its real worth. A definition is no longer required as people know that synthetic turf is a grass-like layer that is installed in sports arenas. Many are also aware of the benefits of installing synthetic turf in their lawns where it act as a perfect replacement for natural grass. It is the installation that matters the most and is also a complicated procedure. The lines below will guide you on how to make the process a breeze. The guideline is especially geared towards those users who want to install fake grass in their homes.
Prepare the Ground
First things first, you will need to prepare the ground before installing artificial turf. The existing grass has to be removed and the ground has to be leveled off. This does not take long as long as you are eager to do the job yourself. Hiring a gardener is always an option though you have to dole out cash for that. Make sure that there are no bumps or depression in the soil and the surface is firm. Bumpy or rough surfaces can play havoc with artificial grass as it tends to sink down.
Lay the Base
Synthetic turf requires a base for installation. This base comprises of fine crushed stone that will keep the fake turf in place. You will also need to provide drainage channels for the turf as otherwise the installation will be ruined. Ample drainage channels are required to direct the water to a lower ground where it could merge with the sewage lines.
Install the Turf
The last step is that of installation of the turf. This is rather easy if you have spend some time and energy in laying the base. You can do the installation without seeking any external help. All you need to do is to follow the instructions in the manual. Fake turf comes in the form of square pieces that can be attached together with clips or hooks. Some varieties of artificial grass come in the form of rolls that resemble a rug or carpet. You can install this variety of fake turf by spreading it out on the surface and fixing it with hooks and clips to the ground. Use the rollers liberally to iron out the creases and set the ball rolling.
Maintenance
It is often said that the synthetic turf can last for years if you follow the maintenance procedures. This requires watering the turf at least twice a week though the frequency should be increased in dry weather. You will also need to remove debris from the turf such as fallen leaves, dirt and other elements.
Synthetic turf can easily last for a year or two and you may not even need to perform regular maintenance checks except for hosing down the lawn. Compare this to the natural grass that requires consistent care and still does not last more than a few weeks on average.
